Summer is for reading

I love to read and have always meant to keep track of all the books I read, so I am starting on my blog. These are two I have read so far this summer, selected primarily for their covers one day in the book section at Wal-mart when I went in to buy posterboard for my class and walked out with $100 worth of books and magazines. I would recommend The Memory Keeper's Daughter and I would like to see the TV movie version that came out recently. I don't know that I would recommend The Doctor's Wife as comfortably because the content was far edgier/darker and not for everyone, but it definitely kept my interest. Coincidentally, both had themes of unwanted children/doctors' decisions. I am now reading another book I bought that day called Promise Not to Tell. It is about murder and I'm not sure what is going on with these debbie-downer book choices I've made of late...not my usual. Neither make my Favorite Books of All Time list, but both were decent summer reading.

We also saw the movie The Strangers a few weeks ago and it scared me to death. If you like scary movies like my husband does, you would probably like it. But if you are home alone a lot and tend to be a scaredy-cat, you're probably better off not being exposed to the images that kept me awake the whole night after we saw it. I woke up at 3 a.m. just completely freaked out and told Ryan I had to read for a while to shake the movie out of my head, then I read The Doctor's Wife and went to a still dark but less menacing place for about an hour until Ryan rolled over about 5 am and gave me the "you-ve-got-to-be-kidding-I-have-to-get-up-for-work-in-an-hour" look and shamed me into turning off the lamp. By then the sun was coming out and I could doze off without all the scary shadows and sounds reminding me of the movie, but I still can't open my front door without thinking of the movie and getting "skeered." Then we saw The Happening when my sister Lane and her boyfriend were in town and it was a complete disaster. An interesting premise, but a totally cheesy execution. Not that I'm a movie critic...or a literary critic for that matter, but this is what is on my radar right now.

Wow! I hadn't checked your blog in a while, and whoa...you have written a bunch! First, I loved the Memory Keeper's Daughter, and while I haven't seen the movie, I would like to see it someday. Second, I am happy to see you posting pictures of the whimsical finds around your home. I remember just looking at all of your knick-knacks and wondering where they came from. And third, I am glad you had a great 4th--the bear story in the woods was funny!
